Melbourne homes and vintage rugs are a natural match. Polished timber floors in a Victorian terrace, a long hallway in a Californian bungalow, a cold winter evening in a weatherboard cottage: a handmade wool rug brings warmth, colour and character to all of them.
In short: when buying a vintage rug in Melbourne, check that it is genuinely handmade, measure your space carefully, ask about age, materials and condition, and where possible see the piece in person before you buy. A good seller will happily send extra photos and videos and let you view the rug by appointment.
Why Vintage Rugs Suit Melbourne Homes
- Timber floors: so many Melbourne homes have them, and a rug softens the room, adds warmth and reduces echo.
- Cold winters: wool is naturally insulating. A thick pile rug makes a real difference underfoot from June to August.
- Period homes: the traditional colours and patterns of a Turkish or Persian rug sit beautifully with ceiling roses, fireplaces and high ceilings.
- Modern homes: in a minimal new build, a single vintage piece adds the character a new home often lacks.
Handmade or Machine-Made?
Many rugs sold as "Persian style" or "vintage look" are machine-made and printed or power-loomed to imitate a traditional design. They can look fine in photos but feel flat in person and do not last the way a handmade rug does.
The quickest test is to turn the rug over. On a hand-knotted rug the pattern is clearly visible on the back, with small irregularities in every knot. Fringes that are part of the warp threads, rather than sewn on, are another good sign. Our guide explains how to tell if a Turkish rug is handmade in more detail.

Choosing the Right Size for Your Home
Terrace and bungalow hallways
Long, narrow hallways are one of the defining features of Melbourne's older homes, and a vintage runner is the perfect fit. Measure the length and width of the hall and leave some timber showing on each side and at each end.

Living rooms
In most living rooms, the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. That usually means around 200 × 300 cm or larger.

Bedrooms and entryways
Smaller rugs and kilims work well beside a bed, at the front door or in a reading corner. Fine flatweaves such as cicim kilims are ideal for these spaces.

If you are unsure, measure the room and mark the rug's size on the floor with masking tape. It is the easiest way to see how a size will feel.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy
- Is it handmade? Hand-knotted pile or handwoven flatweave?
- How old is it, and where was it woven?
- What is it made of? Wool, cotton, or wool on a cotton foundation?
- What condition is it in? Are there repairs, wear or fading? On a vintage rug these are normal, but they should be described honestly.
- Can I see more photos or a video, or view it in person?
- Where is it shipped from, and are there any extra charges on delivery?
- What is the return policy?
Seeing a Rug in Person

Photos never fully capture a handmade rug. Colours change with light, and the feel of the wool is something you can only judge with your hands. If you are in Melbourne, viewing a rug before buying is the best way to be sure.
