Ralph Lauren Style Living Room: How to Get the Look with Vintage Rugs

Vintage rug in a Ralph Lauren style living room

Rich timber, worn leather, shelves of books, a fire in the grate and a deep red rug underfoot. The Ralph Lauren home aesthetic is one of the most searched interior styles for a reason: it feels warm, collected and lived-in, as if it has been built up over generations rather than bought in a weekend.

In short: a Ralph Lauren style living room is built on rich, traditional colours (burgundy, navy, forest green and cognac), dark timber, leather and layered textiles. The rug is the foundation of the whole look, and a vintage handmade Persian or Turkish rug is what gives the room its sense of age and character.

What Defines the Ralph Lauren Home Aesthetic?

The look borrows from English country houses, gentlemen's clubs and classic American homes. A few elements appear again and again:

  • Rich, deep colours: burgundy, oxblood, navy, hunter green and warm camel.
  • Dark timber: panelled walls, wooden bookcases, antique side tables.
  • Leather: a Chesterfield sofa, a worn club chair, leather-bound books.
  • Layered textiles: tartan throws, velvet cushions, heavy curtains.
  • Collected objects: brass lamps, framed prints, equestrian and sporting details.
  • A traditional rug: the piece that ties every other element together.

Nothing in the room should look brand new. The style depends on a sense of history, and that is exactly what a vintage rug brings.

Why the Rug Matters Most

You can buy a leather sofa and a tartan throw anywhere. What is much harder to fake is age. A new machine-made rug printed with a "traditional" pattern tends to look flat and too perfect next to timber and leather.

A handmade vintage rug has the softly faded colours, natural wool and small irregularities that make a room feel genuinely collected. It is also the largest surface in the room after the floor itself, so it sets the colour palette for everything else. Read why vintage Turkish rugs last for generations.

Choosing the Right Colours

Deep red and burgundy

Red is the classic choice for this look. A red or burgundy rug warms up dark timber and leather and makes a room feel instantly inviting, especially in winter.

Other red pieces that suit the look: our burgundy Afghan Turkmen rug and red Konya rug.

Navy

Navy feels a little more tailored and formal. It pairs beautifully with brass, cream walls and cognac leather, and works well in studies and libraries.

For a larger room, our navy Persian Goy Tabriz rug (222 × 330 cm) is a classic choice.

Warm, faded neutrals

Not every Ralph Lauren style room is dark. Lighter versions of the look, with cream walls, linen and natural timber, suit a softly faded Oushak or an antique rug in warm terracotta.

Floral Persian or Tribal Kilim?

Floral and medallion rugs such as Oushak, Hereke, Tabriz and Isfahan suit the more formal side of the look: the drawing room, the dining room, the library.

Tribal rugs and kilims suit the country side of the look: the cottage sitting room, the study, the boot room. Their bold geometry looks wonderful against tartan, tweed and worn leather.

Room by Room

Living room

Choose a rug large enough that at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs sit on it. In most living rooms that means around 200 × 300 cm or larger. A rug that is too small is the most common mistake, and it makes a room feel less grand.

Library or study

A navy or deep red rug under a desk or reading chair, surrounded by books, is the essence of the look. Mid-sized rugs around 125 × 190 cm work well here.

Hallway

A long vintage runner on timber floors sets the tone the moment someone walks in.

Styling Tips

  • Mix patterns confidently. A floral rug, a tartan throw and striped cushions can all work together if they share one or two colours.
  • Let the rug lead the palette. Pick out its colours for cushions, curtains and art.
  • Layer textures. Wool, leather, velvet, tweed and brass together create the depth the style is known for.
  • Embrace age. Soft fading and gentle wear on a vintage rug are part of its charm, not flaws.
  • Use warm lighting. Lamps rather than overhead lights bring out the depth of colour in the wool.
