A richly coloured vintage Balıkesir cicim kilim with rows of hexagonal medallions in red, green, orange, sky blue, slate and yellow, each holding a bold eight-pointed star outlined in black and ivory. A plum-red field dotted with tiny brocaded squares links the medallions, framed by a side border of multicolour diamonds, charcoal end panels of small tree-of-life and flower motifs, and striped ends in rose, green and gold.

The Balıkesir kilim tradition

Balıkesir in north-western Turkey has a long tradition of village and Yörük weaving. Its cicim kilims are known for raised, finely brocaded motifs worked over a flatweave base, medallion layouts and warm, lively colour.
