A bold vintage Ardabil kilim with three navy diamond medallions running down a brick-red centre, each holding an ivory and gold motif outlined in turquoise. Interlocking stepped panels in burgundy and denim blue, scattered with small pink tree motifs, fill the field, framed by a zig-zag border in gold, rose and navy and finished with a fringe at each end.

The Ardabil kilim tradition

Ardabil in north-western Iran, close to the Caucasus, has a weaving history that blends Persian and Caucasian influences. Its kilims are known for strong stepped medallions, architectural layouts and rich, saturated colour.
